Kendall kept it as short as she could, explaining how she'd raised the child as her own, loved Catharine as her own. Coddled her, protected her.

"Too much, I think," Kendall whispered, tears stinging her eyes. "She slipped out one night when I was out Hunting. Damn near smothered her with it. She wanted a night of freedom. But I'd done too good a job of sheltering her. She had no idea what danger was. The men saw a woman alone. They chased her. They raped her." Her throat ached—swallowing was torture. "I heard her screams as she woke up, tried to fight. They hit her. Beat her, damned near to death, while I was trying to get to her. I killed them—but it wasn't soon enough to save her. She was dying. I could either let her go… or I could bring her over."

Turning, she met Kane's dark, angry gaze. "I shouldn't have brought her over. She wasn't strong enough—but I didn't think of anything but saving her, in the only way I could."

Crossing to him, she knelt down in front of him. Her hair fell over her shoulder as she cocked her head, studying him. "So you see… I failed. Unless you know the human is strong enough to survive the Change intact, mentally, emotionally, you don't bring them over. And not only did I not look, I didn't care. It is my fault."

The silence of the room was oppressive as she rose from her crouch on the floor and walked away, slipping out of the room without another word.
